Myles Gaskin
Myles Gaskin Part of crowded backfield
Tue, May 10, 2022, 5:33 PM
Gaskin has further competition for backfield slotting following the Dolphins' signing of Sony Michel, Marcel Louis-Jacques of ESPN reports.
Analysis: The Dolphins previously added Chase Edmonds and Raheem Mostert this offseason, while fellow returnee Salvon Ahmed received a contract tender from the team. Collectively, the moves provide first-year coach Mike McDaniel with a deep backfield with which to work, but in terms of Gaskin's fantasy prospects, when all the key RB cogs are available steady volume figures to be an issue for the 25-year-old, who led Miami with 173 carries (for 612 yards) in 17 games last season, while adding 49 catches for 234 yards and recording seven total TDs in that span.
Lynn Bowden
Lynn Bowden Facing competition for roster spot
Tue, May 10, 2022, 8:16 AM
Bowden (hamstring) will face competition from rookie fourth-round pick Erik Ezukanma this offseason, Joe Schad of the Palm Beach Post reports.
Analysis: Bowden, who spent the entire 2021 season sidelined due to a hamstring injury, very realistically could be on the roster bubble for Miami's new coaching staff. The 24-year-old flashed some competence as a rookie in 2020, when he racked up 28 catches for 211 yards on 37 targets through 10 appearances, but he now faces competition for even a depth gig from all of Ezukanma, Preston Williams and Trent Sherfield.
Sony Michel
Sony Michel Inks deal with Miami
Mon, May 9, 2022, 6:54 PM
Michel signed a contract with the Dolphins on Monday, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
Analysis: The veteran running back will bring depth to a backfield that already includes Chase Edmonds, Myles Gaskin and Salvon Ahmed. Michel appeared in 17 games a season ago with the Rams, rushing for 845 yards and four scores while hauling in 21 passes for 128 yards and one touchdown.
DeVante Parker
DeVante Parker Dealt to New England
Sat, Apr 2, 2022, 12:20 PM
The Dolphins have traded Parker and a 2022 fifth-round pick to the Patriots in exchange for a 2023 third-round pick, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
Analysis: With the emergence of Jaylen Waddle in 2021 and the recent addition of Tyreek Hill, Parker was the odd-man out in Miami. He recorded just 40 receptions for 515 yards and two touchdowns across 10 games for the Dolphins last year. The veteran pass catcher will now look for a fresh start in New England, where he will have the opportunity to earn a significant role in the offense.
Teddy Bridgewater
Teddy Bridgewater Entrenched as backup
Tue, Mar 29, 2022, 7:36 AM
Coach Mike McDaniel described Bridgewater (concussion) as the Dolphins' "backup" quarterback during Monday's press conference at the NFL's annual league meetings, Barry Jackson of The Miami Herald reports.
Analysis: Bridgewater recently declined to discuss the role promised to him after signing with Miami, but McDaniel has now made absolutely clear that the plan moving forward is for the 29-year-old to enter Week 1 as the No. 2 option. McDaniel said the priority for Bridgewater and the coaching staff is "empowering Tua [Tagovailoa] to be the player he be can." Bridgewater, who missed the final four games of the 2021 season with a concussion, is one of the more accomplished and capable backups in the league, and he could certainly provide valuable mentorship for Tagovailoa, who is heading into a make-or-break Year 3 campaign.
Jaylen Waddle
Jaylen Waddle Facing competition for targets
Mon, Mar 28, 2022, 10:03 AM
Waddle is likely to slide down the wide receiver depth chart following Miami's acquisition of Tyreek Hill in a trade with the Chiefs, Travis Wingfield of the team's official site reports.
Analysis: Waddle set an NFL rookie record with 104 catches last season, while also surpassing 1,000 receiving yards and scoring six touchdowns, but he no longer seems like the favorite for the No. 1 wideout spot entering the 2022 season. Hill, whose skill set inspires obvious comparisons to Waddle's, established himself as one of the top playmakers in the league during his time in Kansas City and figures to operate as a pillar of new coach Mike McDaniel's scheme. The six-time Pro Bowler commanded 159 targets in 2021 and surpassed 1,100 receiving yards in four of the last five seasons. While there's still plenty of reason for excitement about Waddle's future, especially in dynasty formats, Hill's arrival could serve to limit the second-year pro's production upside for 2022. Mike Gesicki, Cedrick Wilson and incumbent DeVante Parker also stand to demand a share of targets.
Salvon Ahmed
Salvon Ahmed Inks contract tender
Thu, Mar 24, 2022, 5:15 PM
Ahmed, who was an exclusive rights free agent, has signed his contract tender with the Dolphins, Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald reports.
Analysis: The 23-year-old logged 54 carries for 149 yards and added 12 catches on 19 targets for 117 yards in 12 games with the Dolphins in 2021. This coming season, Ahmed, along with Myles Gaskin and Gerrid Doaks, slots into a depth role in Miami's backfield, behind Chase Edmonds and Raheem Mostert. It's a context that limits Ahmed's fantasy upside so long as the team's top duo remains healthy and available.
Tua Tagovailoa
Tua Tagovailoa Leader of reloaded offense
Wed, Mar 23, 2022, 11:49 AM
Tagovailoa is positioned to lead a revamped Dolphins offense in the 2022 season, with Miami most recently having acquired six-time Pro Bowl wideout Tyreek Hill from the Chiefs on Wednesday, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
Analysis: The Dolphins will surrender significant draft capital in exchange for Hill, giving up five picks headlined by 2022 first-round and second-round selections. Even so, the pairing of Hill with 2021 rookie standout Jaylen Waddle can't be overstated. Heading into what looks like a make-or-break Year 3 campaign, Tagovailoa will not only have the benefit of an improved receiving corps that also returns Mike Gesicki and DeVante Parker, but he'll also get significant upgrades to his offensive line following the offseason pickups of left tackle Terron Armstead (knee) and left guard Connor Williams in free agency. Additionally, head coach Mike McDaniel could have a chance to finally provide Tagovailoa with a rushing game to rely on, given his success in San Francisco and the arrivals of Chase Edmonds and Raheem Mostert (knee). The flip side, of course, is that if Tagovailoa fails to make a leap forward in spite of all the offensive upgrades, he could quickly face pressure from new backup Teddy Bridgewater (concussion) for the starting job.
Tyreek Hill
Tyreek Hill Dealt to Miami in stunner
Wed, Mar 23, 2022, 11:44 AM
The Dolphins acquired Hill from the Chiefs on Wednesday in exchange for 2022 first-, second- and fourth-round picks and 2023 fourth- and sixth-round picks, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
Analysis: Miami intends to sign Hill to a four-year, $120 million contract extension once the deal becomes official. In the wake of this stunning development, Hill will now exit the dynamite Chiefs offense and get a steep downgrade in quarterback from Patrick Mahomes to Tua Tagovailoa. The 28-year-old is coming off a 2021 season in which he racked up a career-high 111 catches (on 159 targets) for 1,239 yards and nine touchdowns in 17 games. In Miami, Hill finds himself atop a depth chart that also includes Jaylen Waddle, DeVante Parker and Cedrick Wilson. Though Hill has the speed and playmaking ability to produce in any context, no longer being tied to Mahomes likely means he'll struggle to replicate the production he turned in a season ago. Hill's fantasy upside this coming season hinges on volume, as well as the on-field rapport he develops with Tagovailoa.
Alec Ingold
Alec Ingold Rehab going well
Mon, Mar 21, 2022, 4:59 PM
Ingold said Monday that his "knee is doing great," and he hasn't experienced any setback so far, Marcel Louis-Jacques of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: Ingold, who tore his ACL last November, signed a two-year, $7.5 million contract with the Dolphins this offseason and is expected to be healthy by training camp. During the 2021 campaign, he recorded two carries for one yard while securing 10 of 12 targets for 85 yards and a touchdown across nine appearances for the Raiders.
Raheem Mostert
Raheem Mostert Says rehab is going well
Mon, Mar 21, 2022, 1:17 PM
Mostert (knee) said Monday that he's "way ahead of schedule" in the rehab process after October surgery, David Furones of the South Florida Sun Sentinel reports.
Analysis: The surgery addressed chipped cartilage in his left knee, and Mostert now has played only nine games over the past two seasons. The Dolphins do expect him to be healthy before Week 1, with Mostert joining the team on a one-year contract shortly after fellow running back Chase Edmonds got a two-year deal. Mostert has the benefit of familiarity with new Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel, formerly the 49ers' offensive coordinator, but Edmonds still is the better bet to lead Miami's backfield in touches. The team also has 2021 holdovers Myles Gaskin, Salvon Ahmed and Patrick Laird on the offseason roster.
Durham Smythe
Durham Smythe Back with Miami on two-year deal
Fri, Mar 18, 2022, 2:25 PM
Smythe signed a two-year, $8 million contract with the Dolphins on Friday, Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald reports.
Analysis: Smythe appeared in all 17 games for the Dolphins in 2021 and caught 34 of 41 targets for 357 yards and zero touchdowns. He figures to once again operate as the top tight end behind Mike Gesicki in 2022.
Alec Ingold
Alec Ingold Signing with Dolphins
Thu, Mar 17, 2022, 11:20 AM
Ingold (knee) is signing a two-year, $7.5 million contract with the Dolphins, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports.
Analysis: Ingold spent his first three professional seasons with the Raiders, and he recorded two carries for one yard while securing 10 of 12 targets for 85 yards and a touchdown across nine appearances in 2021. He tore his ACL in Week 10 last year but is expected to be back to full health in time for training camp. Once the 25-year-old is healthy, he'll have a chance to carve out touches in coach Mike McDaniel's offense in Miami.
Trent Sherfield
Trent Sherfield Lands in Miami
Thu, Mar 17, 2022, 8:30 AM
The Dolphins are signing Sherfield to a one-year contract Thursday, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports.
Analysis: Sherfield reunites with coach Mike McDaniel in Miami, so it seems likely that he will reprise a similar role to the one he handled in San Francisco. Of course, with three straight seasons of under 100 receiving yards under his belt, Sherfield remains off the fantasy radar even with a new team. He stands to handle a depth role and contribute on special teams in the 2022 season.
Chase Edmonds
Chase Edmonds Gets competition for touches
Thu, Mar 17, 2022, 8:27 AM
Edmonds has been joined by Raheem Mostert (knee) atop Miami's backfield depth chart, Joe Schad of the Palm Beach Post reports.
Analysis: Edmonds and Mostert, who is recovering from knee surgery but expected to be ready for Week 1, look set to helm the Dolphins' revamped rushing game. New coach Mike McDaniel helped craft a prolific zone rushing attack in San Francisco, a scheme which Mostert has already proven himself in and which Edmonds appears perfect for, but it's uncertain whether each player's workload will be consistent. If the Dolphins employ a committee approach, or ride the hot hand on a game-by-game basis, fantasy managers may have difficulty extracting predictable production. Incumbents Myles Gaskin and Salvon Ahmed also remain in the building, but appear more suited for depth roles under the new coaching staff.
Myles Gaskin
Myles Gaskin Facing crowded backfield
Thu, Mar 17, 2022, 8:15 AM
Gaskin may have fallen as low as No.3 on Miami's running back depth chart, with the team having signed Raheem Mostert (knee) on Wednesday and Chase Edmonds earlier in free agency, Field Yates of ESPN reports.
Analysis: One of new coach Mike McDaniel's top tasks in Miami is revitalizing the ground game, and the team wasted no time in bringing in two experienced and reliable tailbacks. Mostert has already proven an ability to post prolific numbers under McDaniel's scheme, though he is recovering from a serious knee injury, while Edmonds emerged as one of the more effective change-of-pace complements in the league during his Arizona tenure. Gaskin, meanwhile, posted a career-high 612 rushing yards last season but saw Duke Johnson overtake him for the No. 1 gig down the stretch. If Mostert is fully healthy by Week 1, it seems more than possible that Gaskin will only operate in a depth role.
Raheem Mostert
Raheem Mostert Moving on to South Beach
Wed, Mar 16, 2022, 7:39 PM
The Dolphins and Mostert agreed to a contract Wednesday, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
Analysis: Not only is he reuniting with new coach Mike McDaniel, Mostert will join a backfield led by newcomer Chase Edmonds and Myles Gaskin. First, though, Mostert will need to complete his recovery from October surgery to address chipped cartilage in his left knee. According to a recent report from Adam Schefter of ESPN, Mostert is expected to be healthy by Week 1 of next season, at which point he'll look to avoid the injury bug that limited him to nine appearances between the past two campaigns. When he's been able to suit up in his career, he's averaged 5.7 yards per carry and scored 14 TDs on 320 career touches.
Preston Williams
Preston Williams Staying with Dolphins
Tue, Mar 15, 2022, 10:05 AM
Williams is re-signing with Miami on a one-year contract, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports.
Analysis: Williams is a 2019 UDFA who started seven of eight games as a rookie (32-428-3 on 60 targets) before suffering an ACL tear midway through the season. He then started seven of eight games again in 2020 -- albeit with lesser numbers (18-288-4) -- before suffering a season-ending foot injury. In 2021, Williams again played only eight games (three starts), but on account of smaller injuries and a few healthy scratches. After finishing last season with six catches for 71 yards, the soon-to-be 25-year-old wideout figures to compete for a depth role in 2022. Jaylen Waddle, DeVante Parker and recent free-agent signing Cedrick Wilson are Miami's projected starters at wide receiver.
Mike Gesicki
Mike Gesicki Inks franchise tender
Mon, Mar 14, 2022, 4:18 PM
Gesicki has signed his franchise tag tender with the Dolphins, Field Yates of ESPN reports.
Analysis: There had been some speculation that Gesicki might file a grievance over his franchise tag position, but the 26-year-old now is in line to play for the $10.9 million allotted to tight ends. This past season, Gesicki recorded 73 catches (on 112 targets) for 780 yards and two TDs in 17 games, and he'll continue to profile as the Dolphins' top pass-catching option at his position once again in 2022. In the process, he'll maintain fantasy relevance, more so if he's able to hit pay dirt on a more frequent basis. Given that he combined for 11 scores in 31 games between the 2019 and 2020 campaigns, that's a plausible outcome this coming season.
Teddy Bridgewater
Teddy Bridgewater Bound for South Florida
Mon, Mar 14, 2022, 3:58 PM
Bridgewater (concussion) agreed Monday with the Dolphins on a one-year contract, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
Analysis: Though Bridgewater won't get the chance to compete for a starting role for the Dolphins with the team having committed to Tua Tagovailoa as its top quarterback, the chance to return to his hometown of Miami was too enticing to pass up. Before he missed the final four games of the 2021 season with a concussion, Bridgewater made 14 starts for the Broncos and completed 66.9 percent of his attempts for 3,052 yards, 18 touchdowns and seven interceptions while adding 106 yards and two scores on the ground. The 29-year-old's time as a full-time NFL starter may be over, but he'll profile as one of the more accomplished backup options in the league.
